THINK BEFORE YOU BUY
Take some inventory of what you already have that can be used for storage. We all have plastic tubs that are probably filled with things we can immediately sort through and reuse for other items. Now is the time to downsize what we’ve been storing and only keep what we really need
If you are going to BUY some new containers- here’s a checklist you can use to decide what works best for your situation:
-Is it durable and sturdy for what I need it for: examine the construction of the container. Will it seal tight, is it waterproof, is it already too heavy or bulky even empty- will I be able to carry or move it full?
-Can I see what’s inside- clear plastic, glass or even open baskets/boxes are great to help you keep track of what they are holding and make it easier for you to track your inventory of what you are putting into storage
-Will it fit-keep in mind that even your container needs to have a set place where it will be kept- so measure the space on the shelves in the garage or basement or attic- if the container will impact your walking area- rethink the container and the item you thought you wanted to store
Other “tricks of the trade” of professional organizers are selecting the best:
Trays, caddy, canisters, bins that can maximize storage and order in cabinets, drawers and shelves in various rooms of the home. What works in the kitchen could also be used in the bathroom or home office- THINK PURPOSE AND PLACE
Labeling your storage container are key to keep track of your items and help to prevent you from overloading in clutter or overspending unnecessarily. You can make your mark with a simple SHARPIE or print adhesive labels. You can color coordinate labels for items that belong in certain spaces: blue for the laundry, red for the garage, yellow for the garden- it helps to not only organize the items but helps you KEEP IT CLEAR with a color coded system
